三つの壷に注意▲

 水が入っていないので傾いている
 水がほどよく入っているのでまっすぐ
 水を入れ過ぎたので、覆(くつがえ)ってしまった

宥座之器    
 宥座=座右 に置く器

虚則攲    虚なれば即ち傾(攲)き  
空っぽだと傾き
中則正    中なれば即ち正しく    
ほどよいと真っ直ぐに立ち
満則覆    満つれば即ち覆る     
入りすぎるとひっくり返る

孔子喟然而嘆曰  
孔子が喟然(きぜん・ため息をつく)として嘆じて云った 
吁悪有満而不覆者哉 ああ、悪(いずく)んぞ満ちて覆らざるものあらんや
ああ、どうして一杯になって覆らないものがあろうか
子路曰     
子路が言う
敢問 持満有道乎 敢えて問います 満を持するに道有りや 
しいてお尋ねします 満ち足りた状態を維持出来る方法はありましょうや」
孔子曰     
孔子が答えた
聡明聖知守之以愚 聡明聖知なるは之を守るに愚を以てし
「聡明聖知のすばらしい智があったらこれを守るのに愚を装い
功被天下守之以譲 功天下に被
(こうむ)るは之を守るに譲を以てし
 
功業が天下に行き渡るときは之を守るのに謙譲を以てし
勇力撫世守之以怯 勇力世を撫
(おお)うは之を以て守るに怯(きょう)を以てし
 
勇力が一世を蔽う時はこれを守るのに臆病のような態度をとり
富有四海守之以謙 冨四海を有
(たも)つは之を守るに謙を以てす
 
富力が世界中を占有する場合はこれを守るのに謙遜を以てする
此所謂挹損之之道也 此れ所謂挹
(おさ)えて之を損ずるの道也
 
これが世にいう抑損の道(盈満が自ずから極端な行動動作となることを引き止めて、満を持して行くことができる道)と称するものである」


 
Yuza-no-Ki:
The word "yuzaorappeasement"
means to keep it close at hand as a reminder, and it teaches the "middle way" as taught by Confucius.


虚則攲
If it is empty, it leans.
中則正
If it is moderate, it's a good balance.
満則覆
If it's too full, it's overturned

孔子喟然而嘆曰 Confucius said with a sigh, 
吁悪有満而不覆者哉 "Oh, is there anything that can't be overturned by filling up?"
子路曰 Zi Lu says,
敢問 持満有道乎 "I dare to ask you this. There must be a way to maintain a state of fullness."
孔子曰 Confucius replied,
聡明聖知守之以愚

功被天下守之以譲
勇力撫世守之以怯

富有四海守之以謙

此所謂挹損之之道也
"Even if you have acquired great wisdom, you should usually act as if you know nothing; even if your power has spread all over the world, you should usually act modestly; even if your teeth have spread all over the world, you should usually act timidly; even if your wealth has become so great that you can rule the whole world, you should usually live in a humble attitude."

This is what is known as the path of deterrence (the path that allows us to go full circle by stopping our waxing and waning from becoming an extreme behavior).

空っぽだと傾き
When empty, it leans.

ほどよく水が入ると真っ直ぐに立ち

When it is filled with moderate amount of water, it stands straight.

満ちるとひっくり返って
When it's full, it turns upside down and ...

すべて失う

Lose everything.
 
 人生におけるすべてのことにおいて、無理をすることや満ち足りることを戒め、中庸(ちゅうよう)の徳、謙譲謙虚の徳の大切なことを教えています。 

 仏教でいう「少欲知足」の生き方に通じます。

It teaches us the importance of the virtue of moderation, humility and modesty.
 

It is a way of life based on the Buddhist principle of "being fully satisfied with only a few desires."


 制作者針生清司氏(館林市)は銅司(あかがねし)として板金加工を業としていますが、文献で知った「宥座之器」を制作することを思い立ち、調べると実際に出来上がって機能しているものは中国にも存在しないことを確かめ、試行錯誤の末に13年間をかけて完成しました。

東善寺へ寄進 
「小栗上野介―横須賀造船所の近代化構想が私の仕事につながっていた―」

 館林で住職村上泰賢の講演「小栗上野介」を聴いて
「父は横須賀造船所・工作学校で板金技術を身につけて自分に伝えたが、その原点は小栗上野介の造船所建設による近代化構想にあった!」
と感激。平成24年7月に東善寺に参拝し、小栗公のそばに置いてほしいと「宥座之器」と「木鐸」を寄進された。

■大きさ 当寺へ寄進されたものは柱の高さ44センチですが、中国へ寄進したものは孔子の身長に合わせて高さが2m(なんと大男!)だそうです。
 
Mr. Kiyoshi Hariu, the creator of this Yuza-no-Ki (appeasement vessel), is a sheet metal worker in Tatebayashi City, Gunma Prefecture. He came up with the idea of creating the "Yuza-no-Ki" that he learned about in literature. After researching, he confirmed that there is no such thing even in China that is actually completed and functioning, and after 13 years of trial and error, he completed it.

Donation to Tozenji Temple: 
Mr. Hariu said, "Kozukenosuke Oguri and the modernization concept of the Yokosuka shipyard led to my work."

After listening to my lecture on "Kozukenosuke Oguri" in Tatebayashi, he thought,
"My father learned sheet metal technology at the Yokosuka Shipyard and the Workshop School and passed it on to me, but it all started with Kozukenosuke Oguri's concept of modernization through shipyard construction!" and he was quite impressed. In July 2012, he visited Tozenji Temple and donated the "Yuza-no-Ki" and "Bokutaku" (a bell with a wooden clapper), hoping them to be placed near Lord Oguri.

The one donated to the temple is 44 centimeters tall, but the one donated to China is 2 meters tall to match the height of Confucius (what a big man Confucius was!), according to Mr. Hariu.

木鐸 ぼくたく
 
 振り子が木でできた銅製の鐘(振り子が金属の場合は金鐸という)。古代中国で法令などを知らせる時に鳴らされたもので、転じて「教え導く人」「世の指導者」という意味でも使われる。

 針生さんは漢和辞典や四書五経などの文献をあさって調べ、正確な復元を目指して完成させたもの。
Bokutaku
 
 
A bronze bell with a wooden pendulum (when the pendulum is metal, it is called a "metal" bell). The Bokutaku bell was rung in ancient China to announce laws and ordinances, and is also used to mean "a person who teaches and guides" or "a leader of the world.

 
Mr. Hariu completed this work by searching through Chinese and Japanese dictionaries, the Four Books and Five Classics, and other documents in order to accurately restore it.

Living in Tatebayashi City, Gunma Prefecture, he is an expert in architectural sheet metal work and has been selected as a "Contemporary Master Craftsman" by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare. His workshop is "Akaganeshi."
